Hobdays in Ball Hill was unsure if three snakes and a number of geckos have been stolen or are loose in the shop after the incident at 0500 BST.

Many of the shop's tank enclosures were smashed with cans of flea spray. One tortoise has been re-homed in a bucket.

One of the bird cages has been removed by police after blood was found inside a cage.

Owner Caroline Hobday said she believed the shop's parrot, Jack, attacked the vandals when they tried to get into the cage.

She also expressed concerns about the wellbeing of the shop's birds, which she said were sensitive to trauma.

Ms Hobday said: "If the birds are in a lot of shock, they'll die by tomorrow."

She added that police were examining forensic evidence found at the shop.
