A mum has spoken of the 'horror' she felt when a car crashed into her Coventry living room in the dead of night.

Ruth Postlethwaite was asleep in her family home on Humber Avenue when she was awoken by a screech of brakes swiftly followed by a load bang in the early hours of Monday (6 September).

Getting up to investigate, from her bedroom Ruth saw people running away from her house, and to her horror, a car wedged into her home, with the bonnet in the living room.

Reflecting on the incident, "which could have been so much worse", she told CoventryLive on Monday: "A car crashed into my house this morning at 2.25am. I was woken by screeching tyres and a loud bang.

"I looked out the window and saw some young lads running off.

"I looked down and realised the car bonnet was in my living room. I came downstairs and then the police arrived.

"There was bricks and dust everywhere. I've only just finished the living room as well, so that was a bit frustrating."

Asked what her immediate reaction was, Ruth said: "Just horror, just horror and concern. It was right underneath my bedroom so I was thinking 'oh my gosh'.

"If they were going any faster or hit the house any differently things could have been really different."

Structural engineers and a crew from Coventry Fire Station, led by Watch Commander Nathan Wood, were called to the incident in Humber Avenue, Stoke, in the early hours.

The house was said to have suffered significant structural damage likely to cost thousands to repair.

West Midlands Police is keen to track the driver who fled the scene at around 3.30am on Monday, with a force spokesman telling CoventryLive "enquiries are ongoing".
