Police have seized three cars in a bid to crackdown on reports that boy racers have been taking over supermarket car parks - leaving shoppers fearing for their lives.

Boys racers congregating in flashy cars at supermarkets has been a persistent issue in one particular area of the city recently.

The issue got so bad that police had to warn against people taking the law into their own hands to confront the drivers last month.

Gangs of drivers have been gathering at both Tesco Extra and Asda in Walsgrave, usually on a Saturday and Sunday.

They race around the respective car parks, both often full of shoppers, generally acting in an antisocial and threatening manner.

Many people have expressed their concerns of the dangers it poses for shoppers.

However, it has been revealed officers in the city targeted the Tesco Extra at Cross Point in a sting over the weekend, confiscating a host of separate cars for different offences.

These included a suspected stolen car, no insurance, no MOT and no tax.

The sting was undertaken using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology over a couple of hours on Sunday.

The issue has been one of concern for local residents and shoppers for quite some time. One shopper told CoventryLive back in March they feared some one could get seriously hurt if the matter was not dealt with.

Meanwhile last month police had to issue a vigilante warning after there was talk of people organising groups to confront those responsible as many felt the police were unable to deal with it.
