Enquiries are underway into proposals to build a hundred homes on a college site earmarked for closure.

As previously reported, Henley College is set to close at the end of this academic year.

The announcement has caused upset in the community with ward councillor Ed Ruane saying the closure would ‘rip the heart out of the community’.

Coventry North East MP Colleen Fletcher has also taken action, questioning the Department for Education over the decision.

College bosses have said the move is necessary to safeguard the longer-term future of the college.

Now, a document has been submitted to Coventry City Council’s planning department looking into the possibility of residential development at the site.

Coventry College, which owns the land, said it is one of a 'number of options' they are looking into regarding future use of the land.

The document, called an Environmental Impact assessment (EIA) Screening Opinion, is an early part of the planning process.

It states that it is ‘in anticipation of an outline application for low rise residential development’.

The document reveals that the development would include the construction of around 100 homes, but the sports pitches would be retained.

There is also potential provision for a riverside footpath and cycleway.

The document states it relates to the Henley College site on land and buildings south of Henley Road and to the West of Henley Mill Lane in Bell Green.

Carol Thomas, Principal and CEO at Coventry College, said: "Coventry College is, as to be expected, looking into a number of options regarding future use of the current Henley Campus site, and the screening application is part of that process.

"It is far too early at this stage to go into any further detail as this is a scoping exercise that will take several months."

Didn't take long, did it?

I think closing places like this is a big mistake. We're about to release a generation of young adults into the world that has missed out heavily on their schooling, we are in a recession and will need up to date trained people as we come out of it... Colleges like Henley could be the answer.

I attended Henley in '74 and learned an awful lot. I will always be grateful for the time, patience and skill of the EITB instructors.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

I did read that the architects all over are designing and building for the future way of life so I can see a lot more building being bulldozed.
Why do we need all these houses where are the jobs as 40 per cent of jobs are going for robots to take over.
