It comes despite many closures because of coronavirus

Defiant Nuneaton's market stall holders are carrying on regardless.

They have vowed that the normal Saturday and Wednesday markets will continue despite government advice on social distancing in light of the coronavirus outbreak.

Stuart Tooby, spokesperson for the Nuneaton Market Association, said: "We have been working with the council to make sure we can keep the market going.

"The council have been really, really helpful, they know how important it is for us traders to be able to trade."

He went on: "We just want people to know that the market will still be there."

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council's leisure centres, run by Everyone Active, remain open at the moment.

The Town Hall is also remaining open during the weekdays, although people are being advised to only make essential visits.

But the area office for the council in Bedworth has closed, as has the Civic Hall.

Nuneaton and Bedworth markets are to stay open - but there's a catch

Nuneaton and Bedworth markets are to stay open - but only stalls selling essential items.

Only stall holders who offer items like bread, cakes, meat and vegetables will be able to trade on the borough's two markets.

All other market stalls will be closed.

It has been stressed that those visiting the market must stay at least two metres from others and follow the new government guidelines on social distancing, self-isolation and hygiene.

Jonathan White, head of town centres and marketing at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, explained: “We are following all government guidelines and putting measures in place to help protect our residents and visitors to the market, while ensuring they have access to essential food items.

“We encourage everyone to follow the government guidelines to ensure they keep themselves and their loved ones safe. I’m sure that everyone will understand the need for these measures at this time.”

The news comes as the Town Hall in Nuneaton has been forced to close. It had stayed open but, following government guidance, it has now closed.

But those who have an inquiry about homelessness are being urged to knock the main Town Hall door and someone will be able to help.

The Bedworth Area Office as well as the Civic Hall and the High Street Coffee Bar are also shut.

Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery is now temporarily closed as are the council's leisure centres, run by Everyone Active.

The town's tip, Judkins, remains open but this could be subject to change.
