Pressure on beds is 'very high'

Extreme levels of demand at Nuneaton's hospital have hit the number of beds available for patients.

A patient who contacted Coventry Live claimed that last night (December 22), the George Eliot Hospital did not have enough beds to keep up with the amount of people who needed them.

"I heard the staff talking and they said that they couldn't take any more people in as they had no beds left," the patient said.

While not confirming there were no beds available, a spokesperson for Coventry & Warwickshire Health & Care Partnership did say that pressure on inpatient beds is 'very high'.

"George Eliot Hospital, in common with the health system across Coventry and Warwickshire is facing extremely high levels of demand. Staff are working hard to keep patients safe in very busy Emergency Departments and pressure on inpatient beds is currently very high."

It had been feared that winter demand would be high on the already under pressure emergency departments at the 'Eliot.

But with even more people turning up for help, a plea is being made to people to make sure that they have exhausted all options before going to hospital.

"We ask that people continue to contact NHS111 in the first instance for advice on symptoms and the appropriate care to seek," the spokesperson said.

"We also encourage people to ensure they have adequate supplies of prescription medicines to last throughout the holiday period.”
