Strict new powers will enable Coventry council to issue fines of up to £30,000 to rogue landlords.

Penalties will be issued against landlords who have acted irresponsibly against tenants, or have failed in maintaining legal standards in housing.

The council is also able to apply banning orders, and rent repayment orders.

The new measures make up the council's Policy for Enforcing Standards in Private Sector Housing, which was authorised by Coventry City Council's cabinet on Tuesday, October 2.

It is hoped the new policy will improve the quality of housing in Coventry's private rented sector, while it could also help tackle overcrowding.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities Councillor Ed Ruane (Lab, Henley) said: "This is an attempt to achieve the best quality housing and the best way we can do that is by working closely with landlords in the city."

The measures could be implemented by the beginning of November.

All income obtained from civil penalties will be retained by the council and spent on housing enforcement issues.

Or is this an excuse to build their housing quotes which Nuneaton and Bedworth residents recently objected to taking on Coventry's over spill builds.
