Coventry couple make "deplorable" discovery outside home

It took three days for the situation to be resolved

A Coventry couple have spoken out at their shock and disgust after finding a bundle of mail left abandoned outside their home.

Hazel and Tony Goodsir had just left their home in Holloway Field, Coundon on Tuesday afternoon when they spotted a large pile of papers lying loosely on the ground.

And the couple could not believe their eyes when they pulled their car over to investigate - and found a large pile of letters.

Included in the pile were letters which appear to come from HMRC, in addition to what appears to be a mixture of bills, gifts, and the inevitable junk mail.

However, Hazel and Tony's shock turned to disgust as it took them three days, several phone calls and even a letter to Royal Mail's CEO before the letters were recovered by a local postman.

Speaking to CoventryLive, Hazel said: "On Tuesday afternoon, my husband spied a bundle on papers on the ground, and when he went to investigate, he saw that they were actually letters, with elastic bands discarded beside them.

"We brought them home and phoned Royal Mail, who said that they would log it and get back to us. I assumed that they would want to sort this out as quickly as possible so I called them back, and was told that it was company policy to respond within 72 hours.

"Eventually I wrote a letter to the CEO, because we still hadn't heard back. This morning, the local postman finally came to collect them.

"There could be important stuff that people have been waiting for. It's deplorable, nobody seemed to care that somebody with less than honourable intentions could have taken these.

"It's not acceptable to treat personal mail in this manner."

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: "We are investigating this matter and we have recovered a small bundle of 30 items of mail from Holloway Field.

"It appears the mail could have been dropped by the postman and we apologise for this, as Royal Mail takes the security of mail very seriously indeed. The mail will be redelivered to the customers concerned.

"If anyone requires further information or is worried about deliveries they should contact our customer services in the first instance on 03457 740 740.”

Those were my thoughts.

Off on a tangent... Why are they still allowed to call themselves Royal Mail now they're a private entity?
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
