An army bomb disposal unit will carry out a controlled explosion after a member of the public reported finding a hand grenade.

Officers were called to the scene at Swan Lane and Swancroft Road, Upper Stoke, this morning when the 'small hand grenade' was found in the grass.

West Midlands Police are not treating the incident as terror related.

A number of people contacted CoventryLive upon seeing a large police presence in the area.

One man reported seeing seven police cars as well as the bomb disposal unit at the scene.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "We are currently in attendance at the junction of Swan Lane and Swancroft Road in the Stoke area of Coventry after a small hand grenade was reported to have been found in a grass area by a member of the public at around 11am today (Saturday 14 April).

"There is a 100m cordon in place around the scene and the army bomb disposal team who are also in attendance will now be carrying out a controlled explosion in a nearby location.

"The incident is not currently being investigated as terror related."
