Coventrians turned out in their thousands to watch Alesha Dixon get the city’s Christmas celebrations officially underway with the annual lights switch-on.

Broadgate was packed and buzzing for an evening of entertainment, which culminated in a live set by the Britain’s Got Talent judge.

Alesha, the 2007 winner of Strictly Come Dancing, wowed the crowds with a high energy performance when she was joined by a troupe of male dancers, all dressed in red.

Prior to performing the singer, who rose to fame initially as part of the girl band Mis-Teeq, joined Coventry’s Lord Mayor and Free Radio presenters JD and Roisin to officially switch Coventry’s Christmas lights on at 7.30pm

The singer said she was “delighted” to be in the city, encouraged people to sign and dance along and thanked them for turning out, particularly given the intermittent rain that threatened to dampen spirits.

The entertainment line-up also included a host of other acts, made up of some of the area’s top talent.

Joining Alesha were Coundon Primary Choir, Elite Dance, The Upsiders, UnScripted, and Thomas Teago among others.

There was also a magical performance during the show from Vortex Creates and Highly Sprung, entitled ‘Ready, Set, Snow! Christmas is go!’

Local sports teams were also present, with Wasps, Coventry City, Coventry Blaze and Coventry Bears in on the fun and even IKEA had a part to play in the proceedings.

The Christmas Lights switch-on is organised by Coventry Business Improvement District (BID) and supported by Coventry City Council.

Who?
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
