Lorry driver 'lucky to be alive' after Coventry crash

A lorry driver had a "lucky" escape after his tanker overturned and collided with a barrier in Coventry.


The 42-year-old was trapped in his cab for almost three hours as it was so badly damaged, but he later emerged with only a minor hand injury.

An ambulance spokesman said considering the damage caused to the cab the driver was lucky not to have been killed.

The accident happened at Stonebridge Island on Saturday morning.

Fire crews from West Midlands and Warwickshire fire services worked to try to free the man.

The tanker he was driving contained 20,000 litres of a lactose concentrate, some of which spilled across the road.

The West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said ambulance staff had worked with fire crews to release the man from his cab.

"Miraculously, the man was released from the wreckage having only sustained a relatively minor hand injury," she said.

"Considering the damage caused to the cab in the crash, the man was extremely lucky not to have suffered more serious or even fatal injuries."
