A 10-year-old girl was left unconscious after being knocked off her bike in an apparent hit-and-run in Coventry.

An off duty nurse came to her aid after she was hit at the junction of Langbank Avenue and Willenhall Lane, Binley, shortly after 1pm on Tuesday.

The car left the scene of the incident, but the driver was later traced by police.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “A child was knocked down off a bike.

“The car had driven away but as soon as police had been alerted, they spoke to him.

“He is still being spoken to now.”

The incident happened near to the junction of Langbank Avenue and Willenhall Lane.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: ““The initial calls suggested that the girl had been knocked out briefly but she was fully conscious when ambulance crews assessed her.

“The 10-year-old had suffered abrasions on her head, arms and legs but appeared not to have suffered any serious injuries. Her bike had not been so lucky with the saddle no longer attached to the bike.

“As a precaution, the girl was taken on blue lights to University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire.

“There was no car at the scene of the incident.”

According to one man who saw the aftermath, Matt Keaveney, said there was a large group of people next to the bike and other cars who had stopped.

He said: “I was there roughly five minutes after it happened.

“We saw 3 ambulances, however one was like a mini bus.

“At least 50 people right next to the bikes and cars. Police cornered it off. Luckily there was nothing grizzly. Just some small pieces of debris.”

Matt Keaveney, who had driven past just a few minutes after it happened, said police were looking for witnesses.

He said: “Police asked for witnesses who saw anything or the licence plate, which is how we know the two cars that were still there were not responsible, other wise they wouldn’t want the licence plate right.”
