Customers were stopped from entering a Bedworth supermarket yesterday over fears for a man’s safety.

Police officers were called to the town’s Tesco yesterday afternoon to what the store has called a ‘disturbance’.

A man was taken to hospital after the incident as a mental health patient.

Customers reported being turned away and seeing a man standing on the tills in the store just after 3pm.

A spokesperson for Tesco clarified that customers were not evacuated from the store during the incident.

They said: “I have spoken to the store and they didn’t evacuate, just prevented customers from entering for a period of about 15 minutes as there was a disturbance inside.

“Customers who were in the store already were served as usual and after 15 minutes everything returned to normal.”

A Warwickshire Police spokesperson said: “Police were called to a Tesco store on Leicester Road at around 3.20pm today after concerns were raised for the safety of a man in his 30s.”

“Officers and ambulance attended and the man has been taken to George Eliot Hospital as a precaution.”

West Midlands Ambulance Service was also called to the incident at the store in Leicester Road.

A spokesperson said: “We were called at 3.22pm by Warwickshire Police, it was a mental health patient, a man.

“One ambulance attended and we took him to George Eliot Hospital.”
