Gary Jones was found guilty of attempted murder

A Coventry man has been jailed for 25 years after being found guilty of attempted murder.

Gary Jones launched the terrifying attack on two good Samaritans - stabbing of them in the face - after they had escorted an upset young woman, who was in the street in her pyjamas, back to a home in Holbrooks.

Jones, 27, had been drinking with friends at the house in Whitmore Park Road on the evening of July 16 last year, before a row broke out and the young woman left in a distressed state.

The two victims, while walking home following a night out, saw her and tried to comfort her, before taking her back to the house and knocking on the front door.

The door was opened by the young woman's mother and there was an argument, before Jones, of Chandos Street, Stoke, ran out of the property carrying a large kitchen knife.

The female victim tried to calm him down and take the knife, but Jones lashed out and stabbed her in the face.

When her male friend went to her aid he was stabbed a number of times to the neck, back and head by Jones.

On hearing the victims’ screams, neighbours called the emergency services and the victims were taken to the hospital.

Jones fled the scene of the attack, but later handed himself into the police and later pleaded guilty to two offences of wounding with intent, having an article with a blade but pleaded not guilty to attempted murder.

Following a trial at Warwick Crown Court he was found guilty of attempted murder of the male victim.

He was sentenced today to 25 years in prison, with a five-year licence extension.

Jones was sentenced to 25 years for the attempted murder, plus 12 years and seven years for the two wounding charges which will run concurrently.

He was also jailed for three years for possession of a knife, again to run concurrently.

Paul Reid, District Crown Prosecutor from West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service, said: “This was an unprovoked and violent attack on two members of the public who had tried to help a young female who was distressed.

“The two victims have been left with life-changing injuries.

“He will now have to deal with the consequences of his cruel actions.”

Knifeman who attacked two Good Samaritans loses appeal over jail term

A thug jailed for a savage knife attack on two Good Samaritans deserves every day of his 25-year jail term, judges ruled.

Considered a public danger, he was jailed for 25 years and ordered to serve an additional five years on extended licence after his prison term.

Rejecting a challenge to the 25-year term at the Court of Appeal, a top judge said the case was “truly horrific”.

Jones had been binge drinking vodka at his partner’s house in Whitmore Park Road in July 2016 when a young lady there became upset and went outside.

Mr Sheen and Miss Thorley were passing and took pity, taking her back to the house and knocking on the door.

It was then that Jones armed himself with the knife and began his savage assault on the pair.

He claimed he had accidentally injured Miss Thorley when she tried to disarm him and could only remember waving the blade in front of Mr Sheen.

Jones’ appeal lawyers argued that the 25-year custodial part of his sentence was “manifestly excessive” for the attempted murder.

But Mr Justice Jay, sitting with Lord Justice Singh and Mr Justice Irwin, said the appeal bid was “without merit”.

“Given the seriousness of these offences, a custodial term of 25 years was entirely justified,” he told the London court.

“The crown court judge’s reasoning and approach in arriving at that sentence cannot be impugned.

“This application must be refused.”

Should have given him an extra five for his cheek!

Remember, it is the tax payer funding these frivolous appeals, there must be more done to discourage them.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
