Steaks have been mysteriously taken off the shelves at a Nuneaton shop.

Customers at the Co-op store in Attleborough now have to ask a member of staff to fetch one from a secure area.

The shelves at the back of the Kem Street store, which are filled with chicken, beef burgers and other meats, now have a noticeable gap.

A sign says: ‘Customer notice - steaks are available. Please ask a member of staff for assistance.’

The store declined to comment on the decision, but a branch of the Co-op in Devon has removed its steaks from the shelves this week because of shoplifters.

The shop in Plymouth placed a customer notice on the shelf in the steaks’ place.

It said: “Due to the high level of shoplifting on steak please ask a member of staff if you require this product we apologise for any inconvenience this causes our honest customers.”

Staff said they were being faced with meat thieves almost every day and sometimes there wasn’t enough left for customers.

There are different Co-op stores up and down the country operated by different firms.

The Attleborough shop is operated by the Heart of England Co-op, which has been asked for a comment.

Co-op has said that the decision to hide steaks in Plymouth is in response to a recent spate of thefts and is not a policy across all stores.
