Two students were reportedly robbed at knifepoint while walking through a popular shortcut in Coventry.

The path which connects Shultern Lane and Cannocks Lane, in Cannon Park, and runs around the back of Canley Crematorium, is regularly used by students at the University of Warwick, as well as other pedestrians and dog walkers.

Posters have been placed at entrances to the pathway, stating: ‘Do NOT go down this lane on your own. 2 students were robbed at knifepoint on Friday.’

Police say they have received two reports of robberies on the lane; the first saw a bag taken from a man in his 20s on Friday, December 9, at the entrance to Shultern Lane.

However, officers say they are currently unclear what threats were made or if any type of weapon was produced.

This was followed by another robbery in Shultern Lane on Sunday, December 11, at around 10.40am. A 24-year-old woman who was threatened and robbed, but was uninjured.

Local neighbourhood police sergeant Jo Comer said: “We are ramping up our patrol plans with additional high-visibility officers deployed at key times in affected areas, and an investigation is underway to identify the offender.

“We are aware of the posters and decided there is no reason why they can’t stay in place: They offer sound crime prevention and personal safety advice, namely urging people to stick to busier, well-lit areas after dark and to walk together in secluded areas.

“The local police team, investigation officers, Coventry City Council and Warwick University are working together to ensure that this part of Coventry remains a safe place to live, work and study.”

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call police on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
