Planning permission has been granted for a new student accommodation block which will become Coventry’s tallest building.

The £50million development will be built on the site of Cox Street car park - opposite Coventry Sports and Leisure Centre on Fairfax Street.

The 21-storey building will be Coventry’s tallest at around 200ft tall, beating the 20-storey Belgrade Plaza development which is currently under construction.

CODE Student Accommodation submitted plans to Coventry City Council in August to build the 1,000 bedroom development on the 600-space car park.

The council has now approved those plans.

Documents show that four towers ranging from six-storeys high to 21-storeys high will be built on the 600-space car park.

The plans also show that the ground floor will be used as retail units.

The developers have said they wanted to create a high-quality and landmark development that “would benefit from a move away from the traditional rectangular/square box appearance”.

The public consultation period ended in September with one neighbour response in support of the application.

The person who supported the application said: “The height of this building is both appropriate and desirable - and will have the added benefit of hiding from view Priory Halls, Britannia Hotel and the bingo hall - all of which are pretty loathsome.”
