Passengers faced long delays as emergency services dealt with the incident



Coventry commuters faced rail chaos this morning after a man was hit by a train near to Birmingham International railway station.

Emergency services were called to the tracks at the station, which serves the NEC and Birmingham Airport, at around 6.40am.

Among those were two ambulance crews and a paramedic officer, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A statement from British Transport Police said: “We were called at 6.40am today following a report a person had been struck by a train, just north of Birmingham International railway station.

“Emergency services arrived and a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are working to establish the man’s identity and inform his next of kin. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

The incident caused huge delays for train passengers as all lines between Birmingham's International and New Street stations were closed for some time.

A number of services cancelled - including a number to Coventry - while some passengers faced delays of up to an hour and a half.

Virgin Trains, London Midland, Cross Country and Arriva Trains Wales all reported disruption to services, while replacement bus services were eventually laid on from Birmingham New Street to Coventry.
