Appeal to cyclists after two children knocked over at popular Warwickshire park

Rangers at Draycote Water are keen to ensure cyclists and pedestrians work together to make the area safe

Cyclists visiting a popular Warwickshire leisure park have been told to slow down after two children were knocked over.

Staff at Draycote Water in Rugby have now reminded cyclists to respect the 15mph speed limit while cycling around the reservoir.

Rangers now want cyclists and walkers to work together to ensure no one else is injured.

According to rangers, over 500,000 people visit the site each year to enjoy walking or riding through the countryside.

Visitor site supervisor Tom Crawford said: “We want to encourage cyclists and walkers to work together and look out for each other when using the paths to avoid any accidents.

“The speed limit for cyclists is 15mph.

“We have a speed limit for the safety of all our visitors but we’ve unfortunately seen two instances recently where children have been knocked over by cyclists who’ve been going too fast and were unable to react quickly enough.”

Mr Crawford went on to provide advice to both cyclists and pedestrians on how they should behaviour around the site to ensure they are seen and safe.

He added: “The last thing we want to do is to start policing the paths, but we want all our visitors to enjoy their visit and have fun safely.

“It’s a really family friendly environment so children can enjoy all our activities.

“A lot of our visitors take their time walking around, enjoying the facilities and taking their children out on bikes and scooters.

“So, if you’re a cyclist approaching a walker, make sure they know that you’re there – slow down, and sound your bell, that way people aren’t surprised."

“It’s the same if you’re on foot, if you see a cyclist, let them know you’re aware and give them room to pass you.

“We’re all there to enjoy the countryside. We just need to show respect and help to keep each other safe.”

Half the cyclists I encounter don't have a bell or brakes or lights! :fuming:

I believe an audible warning vice is compulsory, as is a reflector?

My beef with cyclists is riding on pavements and having no lights when on the road after dark. Again, I understand that both are summary offences?
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
