City bakery fined £2,000 for use of equipment without owners permission

A city bakery has been ordered to pay a £2,000 fine for using another company’s baking equipment without permission.



Mr Akhlaque Ahmed, trading as Windmill Bakery out of Relton Mews in Eden Street, was originally taken to court by bakery equipment company Bakers Basco in 2013 for misusing and converting their equipment to his own needs.

At the time he agreed to a court injunction banning his bakery from taking and using Bakers Basco trays and trolleys.

But after he was found to be breaking the injunction in May this year – converting more Bakers Basco equipment – Mr Ahmed appeared the Coventry Combined Court last month, where a judge fined him £2,000 and ordered him to pay an additional £3,330 in damages and costs to Bakers Basco.

It is not known how Mr Ahmed obtained the equipment.

Bakers Basco loans re-usable plastic bread baskets to bakeries around the country, helping them cut costs and reduce the environmental impact of transporting baked goods.

However, every year millions of pounds worth of the baskets are not returned to the company.

At first, Bakers Basco ask for the equipment back, but the company also employs a specialist team which tracks them down and where necessary it uses the courts to reclaim them.
