A man has been arrested after a two-day rooftop stand-off with police in Coventry.

The 23-year-old, who was wanted for recall to prison, was arrested at 9.30am today on suspicion of criminal damage and assaulting a police officer.

According to unconfirmed reports, the man, who had spent the night on the roof of a property in William McKee Close, Binley, climbed down a lamp-post and surrendered himself to police.

The man had climbed onto the roof at around 1pm yesterday afternoon when a police went to execute a warrant for a pre-planned arrest.

West Midlands Police have said that the man locked himself in the attic during that initial attempted arrest.

A statement from the force said: “It’s alleged he later made threats to stab officers who were trying to detain him and then emerged on the roof of the house holding a knife.”

Yesterday reports were received that the man had been ripping up roof tiles and throwing them at police.

A police spokesman said: “Two police officers suffered minor injuries after being struck by roof tiles. Two police cars were also damaged.”

Specialist negotiators were called to the scene and worked throughout the day and night to try and talk the man down.

Nearly a dozen emergency service vehicles were in attendance over the 21 hour stand-off, including three police vans, a West Midlands Fire Service hydraulic lift and fire engine, two ambulances and a police dog crew.

Residents also reported hearing a police helicopter, without searchlights, hovering over the area during the early hours.

Residents of Quorn Way and William McKee Close were left unable to get to their homes as a police cordon closed off most of the road.

The number 13 bus service was diverted until this morning, however some buses that had travelled down the road before the official diversions were put in place were forced to make tight U-turns.

Police have now thanked residents for their help and patience during the protest.

Chf Insp Harvi Khatkar said: “We appreciate the massive impact on the local community and are grateful for their support and patience yesterday and this morning.”

Must of been hunger pangs made him give up I assume he did nt get his Mc Donalds then last night which he requested.

I just wonder who will pay for the replacement of roof tiles on the homes he ripped off and threw at the police.

Good question Melisandre!

If they were owned by Whitefriars it could be the tenants who have to pay even if they have no connection with the protester.

We're too soft on people like this. He ought be billed for the cost of everything... Car damage, roof damage, treatment of police officers, fire brigade call out, ambulance call out, etc. etc. Next time, the pathetic attention seeking ar$ehole might think twice.

But don't expect it to happen with the lilly livered judiciary and do-gooders we have in society. :fuming: :fuming: :fuming:
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

That will be about right Dutchman for Whitefriars perhaps the police can give Whitefriars crime numbers.

Why should tenants have to pay for it or have to have insurances for that matter after all if any people claim social , social does nt include money for insurances in a brake down in their money like these housing associations expect every one to get. Are they in with the insurances company s making the rich man richer the poor poorer . Is nt it the insurance company s that own the banks.
