Coventry and Warwickshire are being warned to prepare for torrential downpours and possible flooding over the Easter weekend after the Met Office issued a yellow rain alert.

The warning issued shortly before 11am today says heavy rains are being forecast for the region between 9pm tonight and noon Monday.

The warning added conditions are expected to be made worse by strong winds and said there was also a risk of flooding.

The conditions are as a result of Storm Katie - an area of low pressure to the south west of the UK that is expected to deepen today and run northwards across England and Wales on Monday.

It will be accompanied by what the Met Office described as “some very strong winds, large coastal waves and heavy rain”.

The warning said: “A period of heavy, persistent rain is expected to move northeastwards Sunday night and Monday morning, bringing a risk of surface water flooding, perhaps exacerbated in places by wind-blown debris.

“The rain is expected to clear northeastwards from southwest England by early Monday, from much of the Midlands around mid-morning, then finally clear from eastern England around Monday lunchtime.

“Be aware that some low level disruption from localised flooding looks likely.”

The Met Office’s chief forecaster added: “The persistent spell of rainfall could widely bring 10 to 20mm, perhaps 30mm locally.

“Across central southern and southeastern England the main band of rain will be followed by further bands of showery rainfall, which could locally bring 10 to 15mm in only a couple of hours.”

The chief forecaster added that there was some uncertainty over which areas of the UK would suffer the heaviest rainfall.
