Coventry is being treated to a unique opportunity to see one of the masterpieces of The Courtauld Gallery’s collection in the city.

An exhibition opens at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum later this week and will showcase Edgar Degas' famous painting, Two Dancers on a Stage, alongside three other works by the artist.

A founding member of the Impressionist group of artists, Degas was fascinated with daily Parisian life, finding inspiration from the day to day activities of the lower classes.

With particular focus on ballet dancers, he would sketch, sculpt and paint them at rest, practicing and performing.

On loan from the Courtauld Gallery, in London, the works will be showcased in Coventry and acts as a reminder of the gallery's links to the city.

In 1905, the Courtauld company built its first viscose plant in Coventry, employing thousands of people.

The wealth generated enabled Samuel Courtauld to develop his magnificent collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, which form the basis of the Gallery's collection.

The exhibition will open on Friday, March 11, and will run until Sunday, June 19.

Completely free to enter, the works showcased are just a few of Degas' remarkable portfolio.

Meanwhile, the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum is showcasing the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition - which city residents have praised as 'incredible' - until April 10.
