Police have ordered a Coventry shop to stop selling alcohol.

Officers took court action to revoke the licence of Highway Wines, in Sewall Highway, Wyken, in October after Yasif Iqbal - the brother of the licensee - received a suspended prison sentence for growing cannabis at the back of the shop.

However a couple of weeks later, Iqbal, 36, of Sewall Highway, was found with four wraps of class A drugs and a subsequent sniffer dog search of the shop uncovered other items.

Iqbal was sentenced to 12 months in prison for possession of a class A drug at Warwick Crown Court last week.

Officers also blamed the shop for causing anti-social behaviour in the area.

PC Dawn Murkett, from the Upper Stoke neighbourhood team, said: “This action is already having a significant impact locally.

“The shop was a catalyst for anti-social behaviour in the area and we’ve already seen an improvement.

“After observing alcohol being sold after hours we were able to take action.

“I hope this sends out a clear message that anti-social behaviour, drugs and illegal sales of alcohol will not be tolerated and we will take positive action to stop people who wish to disregard the law.”

West Midlands Police said the shop would also have to remove all signs advertising booze.
