A Met Office yellow warning of severe weather has been issued for Coventry and Warwickshire as temperatures plunge.

Forecasters are predicting that flurries of sleet or snow will sweep across the region tonight as thermometers hit freezing for the first time this year.

Commuters are being warned to be on their guard for heavy showers that could turn into snow overnight, as well as sleet being blow into the region from Wales.

The Met Office has also predicted that: “Ice is likely to form on untreated surfaces.”

On Monday, a Level Two Cold Weather Alert was issued for the West Midlands indicating that there was an extremely high chance of wintry showers and icy conditions taking hold of the region between Monday January 11 and Sunday January 17.

Today that alert was escalated to a Level Three.

The Met Office says: “There is a 99 per cent probability of severe cold weather, icy conditions and heavy snow between 9am on Thursday 14 January and 12pm on Tuesday 19 January.

“This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services.”

But Coventry's Bablake Weather Station says it’s not the snow travellers should be worried about, but frost and fog that will set in over the next week.

A spokesman said: “Although there might be a further wintry shower or two in the coming week as the cold weather digs in, it will be frost and fog that is the winter hazard rather than snow, with a largely dry week ahead as high pressure dominates.”

It's winter we get snow; don't we? How can they call this news? :stir:
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
