The grim discovery was made by a member of the public at around 12.30pm today in a stretch of water near Sutherland Avenue and Alderminster Road, Mount Nod.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene and West Midlands Fire Service helped police recover the body at around 4.30pm.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save the person in the river, and they were confirmed dead at the scene.”

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “The death is currently being treated as unexplained and a full forensic post mortem to establish the cause of death will be conducted tomorrow.

“Although no formal identification has been made the family of missing man Luke Whelan have been informed and specialist officers continue to liaise with them.”

Alderminster Road was closed to the traffic from 1pm until nearly 5pm.

The Number 10 bus which stops on Alderminster Road and Lower Eastern Green Lane needed to be diverted as recovery operations took place.

Police said that the death was currently being treated as unexplained.

While no formal identification has been made, the family of missing Coventry dad Luke Whelan has been informed.

Specialist officers from West Midlands Police are liaising with the family.

Mr Whelan, a 37-year-old dad-of-two, was last seen at a petrol station in Station Avenue, Tile Hill, on the evening of Saturday November 28.

Before that he had been at the Unicorn pub in Eastern Green.

Linsey Whelan wrote the following tribute on her Facebook page: “It is with a heavy heart that our beautiful Luke has left our world and joined another.

“Never in our wildest dreams did we ever think our Luke would go at such a young age, a man who lit up our world, he was one of life’s characters with a big beautiful heart.

“We will never stop loving Luke, he was always just so happy and had so much to live for.

“As a family we have been overwhelmed by the support and kind messages along this awful journey.

“I could write so much about Luke I just wish you had all known him.

“Our devastation is beyond words, our hearts are broken, he was too young too beautiful and way too much to give.

“Once again I thank you all for your support you have been amazing xxxxxx until we meet again my Lukey .. Xxxxxxxxxxx”

The 37-year-old went missing on November 28 with the last confirmed sighting at the Station Road petrol station in Tile Hill Village.
