A man who thought he was sailing along the coast of England has discovered that he had actually been circling a small island.
The sailor had attempted to navigate from Gillingham to Southampton but was instead lapping a 36sq mile island in the Thames estuary, Reuters reports.
Robin Castle, a member of the local lifeboat station, said: "He was attempting to travel around the UK from Medway to Southampton and had somehow lost his bearings and ended up travelling around the Isle of Sheppey.
"It seems he didn't have the usual maritime charts or navigational equipment."
The man, who was attempting to navigate using a road map, was rescued by emergency services after his motorboat ran out of fuel.
Wouldn't passing under the bridge which connects Sheppey to the mainland have been a bit of a clue to the fact he was sailing around in circles?
