Work will begin next week on the latest phase of road improvements in Coventry city centre.

Traffic lights will be removed and the paved areas widened around Belgrade Plaza - at the junction of Upper Well Street and Corporation Street.

There are also plans to find an alternative route into West Orchards car park in a bid to alleviate congestion along both streets.

The work ties in with the recently completed improvement schemes that have taken place on Far Gosford Street and at Council House Square.

It is hoped the work, which starts on Tuesday and is expected to take about seven months to complete, will ensure the Plaza becomes an even more attractive, open public space.

There are a number of other improvement works being carried out around Coventry over the Easter holidays.

Drainage work will take place in Brownshill Green Road, in Coundon, from Saturday until May 29, and there is resurfacing work being carried out throughout the week in Wappenbury Road, Henley; Middle Ride, in Willenhall; Westmoreland Road in Wyken and Cascade Close in Cheylesmore.

Another bl**dy patio!
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

I had to walk along Corporation Street the other day in both directions, it was like walking through a building site! There's an idiotic diversion for pedestrians at the Well Street end, I avoided it on the return journey by using the south side of the road instead of the north side.

It was interesting to see the original foundations though. There's about a foot thickness of steel reinforced concrete, it's built more like a runway than a road. Didn't envy the people who had to bore through that.

End in sight for major roadworks scheme in Coventry city centre

A major roadworks scheme in Coventry city centre is due to end before Christmas.

The improvement work around Corporation Street and the Belgrade Plaza started in April and has seen traffic lights removed and pavements widened.

A sign has now been put up to say the roadworks will be finished by December 20.

The changes should help ease congestion in Corporation Street and Upper Well Street for those using West Orchards car park.

There is still some work to finalise on the pavements, but this will not affect traffic.

The city council’s website says: “Some parts of the paved areas will be left ‘black-topped’, however please be aware that this is not the final look of the paving.

“The areas are to be filled with flat Tarmac in readiness for new tree pits and benches that will be installed in the new year.

“Also, work will continue on the footpaths for the installation of concrete ‘cubes’, which are set to replace the bollards on the higher kerbs which used to be in place to deter vehicles from parking on the paved areas at any time.

“The installation of the cubes will have no effect on traffic management and will be done off of the highways.

“This is to ensure the area is not left with fenced off sections and will be fully opened for pedestrians over the Christmas and New Year period and will mean that new paving will not need to be dug up and replaced.”
