More part-time traffic signals are heading to the city with the latest set to be installed at the A45 roundabout junction with Sir Henry Parkes Road - next to the fire station and the police station, in Canley.

The shape of the roundabout will also be changed to allow two lanes of traffic to turn right towards Warwick University and Westwood Business Park from the southbound carriageway.

Work is expected to take place seven days a week for about 12 weeks. It will be the latest set of roadworks to affect users of the A45 following ongoing work at Tollbar Island and previous lengthy changes to the Kenilworth Road junction.

A Coventry City Council spokesman said: “Work will take place to signalise the A45 arms of the roundabout – which, when operational, will operate part-time during the busiest periods only to reduce delays during the peak hours.

“The works are being undertaken outside of the busiest periods whenever possible to minimise the disruption.

“They will also be undertaken seven days a weeks to keep the programme as short as possible, but it is still expected to take around 12 weeks.”

The council also said the work had been planned to coincide with the completion of part of the roadworks around Warwick University - which had been causing major traffic jams in the area for weeks.

A council spokesman added: “Work began before the Christmas break on the side roads providing improvements for pedestrians, it was agreed the bulk of the work should be delayed until after the temporary traffic lights were removed from Gibbet Hill Road / University Road / Scarman Road roundabout, which happened on Tuesday, January 20.”

The latest roadworks also coincide with major redesign work at the Whitley interchange and ongoing changes at the train station junction of Coventry ring road, as part of the multi-million pond Friargate scheme.

More temporary traffic lights were also recently installed at the Ikea ring road junction, regularly causing traffic to queue onto the main ring road at peak times.
