Fine warning for Coventry's chewing gum litter bugs

Postby dutchman » Thu Sep 25, 2014 2:42 pm

Coventry University and council bosses have joined forces in a bid to cut down on chewing gum in the city.

The latest campaign by the Chewing Gum Action Group has been backed by both the university and Coventry City Council and will see shoppers and resident encouraged to Bin It Your Way.

The campaign will feature advertising involving professionally choreographed dance moves, encouraging gum chewers to dispose responsibly of gum litter in a fun way – or face a fine of up to £80.

The brightly-coloured adverts will appear in a range of locations across the area, including roadside banners, bus stops, lampposts and telephone kiosks.

Last year’s work by CGAG led to an average fall in gum litter of 47 per cent in participating areas, with some authorities reporting even higher results.

Stephen Beasley, on behalf of the university and council partnership, said: “Chewing gum litter is a real nuisance that is costly and difficult to remove.

“We want the residents of Coventry to be proud of where they live, which is why we have partnered with the Chewing Gum Action Group to raise awareness and proactively tackle this problem.

“Having seen previous years’ positive results we hope that this campaign will encourage gum chewers to think before they dispose of their gum and understand that they can play a part in making Coventry a clean and inviting place to live.”

As a gum chewer myself I simply can't understand the mentality of littering with it. There are plenty of bins around the city, use them!
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
