Organisers of the first large, public agricultural event since 2009 at the former home of the Royal Show said they were delighted with attendance numbers.

Stoneleigh Park, near Leamington Spa, in Warwickshire, hosted the Royal Show for 160 years until four years ago, when officials said it was no longer economically viable.

The first Country and Livestock Show has been held there this weekend.

Show chairman Mervyn Foster said people had been "pouring in".

He said: "We've had a great response from local farmers giving us sponsorship money and from local firms giving us sponsorship money for the show. Everyone's on board.

"They just want to see animals back at the Royal Showground and this is the first time people can come out have a good time, see animals and get a flavour of the Royal Show."

The event aims to inform town dwellers about rural life and encourage young farmers while showcasing rural industries.

For many years, the Royal Show was among the UK's agricultural highlights of the year.
