Council to offer free parking in the city before Xmas

Late night shoppers look set to be able to park for free in Coventry in the run-up to Christmas this year.

The council has proposed there should be free parking on Wednesdays after 4pm from November 28 with the cabinet set to rubber-stamp the decision at its next meeting. The free offer will be available at car parks in West Orchards, Lower Precinct, Barracks multi-storey and Salt Lane.

Coun Lynnette Kelly, cabinet member for city development said: “I am delighted that we will be able to offer free parking on Wednesday nights.

“It’s a great way to encourage even more people into the city to take advantage of the late night shopping in the run-up to Christmas. We have run this offer for a number of years and it has proved to be really popular with shoppers and retailers. These are difficult economic times and I hope this and the other offers we are running will help ease the pressure a bit.”

She added the council also plans to extend its £10 weekly ticket offer, which was introduced last year. The tickets, which people can purchase from payment machines, are available in five car parks: Bishop Street, Gosford Street, Grove Street, Whitefriars Street and New Union Street.

“It’s a fantastic offer – a seven day parking ticket for just £10,” said Coun Kelly.

“That’s a saving of over £30 for people who work in the city centre. In fact, it has been so popular – we are now adding another car park, the multi-storey in New Union Street, which will mean even more people can save some money on parking.

“This weekly ticket offers real value for money and I hope it shows our commitment to supporting the city centre and the people who work here.”

The Saturday shoppers’ tariff, which was introduced last year, is also set to be extended. Cheaper rates for longer stay parking of between two and six hours are available at Bishop Street, Cheylesmore, Christchurch House Basement, Cox Street, Lower Ford Street, Manor House and New Union Street car parks. The proposals are set to be agreed by the cabinet on October 9.

No it's not. Like many others, I'll save myself the money and not bother visiting.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
