Bedworth has produced another stunning show of gratitude to the men and women who have served their country.

Delighted Royal British Legion officials have announced that the proceeds of their Poppy Appeal are the highest since records began.

The appeal raised a total of £21,675,96p, a staggering £5,000- plus increase on the previous best.

Graham Ball, chairman of the Bedworth Branch of the Royal British Legion, said: “It is a substantial increase and a magnificent achievement.

But he added: “Bedworth has always been very supportive of the ex-service community and this money has come from the ordinary, everyday people in the street.

“They have again done us proud and we are very grateful.”

Last year’s Poppy Appeal total was a record-breaking £15,000 a figure that few people expected to be beaten.

But it has been smashed by an incredible 33 per cent.

“The Poppy Appeal is not a competition, but we obviously set out to raise as much as we can,” said Graham Ball.

“But we could not have achieved it without the hard work of Poppy Organiser Joy Jones and all of the volunteers who helped.”

Bedworth has long been recognised for its patriotism and support for veterans and serving soldiers and their families.

Its November 11 Armistice Day Parade attracts thousands of people from across the nation and beyond.

Proceeds from the town’s Poppy Appeal have rocketed from around £4,500 to the present figure in just a few years.

“The situation in Afghanistan has obviously highlighted the sacrifices the men and women of the Armed Forces make, but the increase in the Poppy Appeal collections is exceptional,” said Graham Ball.

Proceeds from the Poppy Appeal enable the Royal British Legion to help and support veterans and present serving members of the Armed Forces in many different ways.
