A 20-year-old man is in hospital with serious injuries after being attacked in Leamington Spa.

He was hit with what’s thought to have been a bottle which missed an artery in his neck by a millimetre.

It happened in the Pump Room Gardens, next to Dormer Place, at around 8:50pm on New Year’s Eve.

He had several hours of surgery at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire where he remains in a stable condition.

Police are treating it as attempted murder and arrested 5 men in Beauchamp Avenue shortly after the attack.

DC Paul Whitehurst, from the Leamington Local Investigation Team, said:

“It was New Year’s Eve so there would have been people around. The injuries to the man’s neck are extremely severe, and he is very fortunate that the bottle missed a main artery, otherwise this could have been a murder enquiry. We appeal for anyone with any information, no matter how small, to come forward.’

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Detective Constable Paul Whitehurst in the Leamington Local investigation Team on 01926 415000 x 4296, or they can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 where the information can be given anonymously.
