Taxi drivers' criticism over Coventry's roads

Taxi drivers have criticised the council over the state of roads in Coventry following recent bad weather.

The amount of grit being put down in the city was being halved after Wednesday, the city council has said.

Alias Yousef, of the Coventry Taxi Association, said the authority was "on top of it last week", but not more recently.

Two schools were closed and another six were partially shut on Thursday, Warwickshire County Council said.

Broad Heath Community School, which was shut to pupils, was the only school closure reported by Coventry City Council on Thursday.

'Really dangerous'

The authority said on Wednesday it had managed to keep main roads and many secondary roads moving.

But it would be reducing the amount of gritting in line with government requests, the council said.

The authority was due to carry out a normal round of gritting on Wednesday evening but then it would be reducing levels of grit by 50% and concentrating on A and B roads and problem areas.

Mr Yousef said: "They were on top of it last week. This week they've all fallen behind. I don't know what's gone wrong with them.

"The roads that don't get used a lot are really dangerous to go down because some of them have still got black ice."
