Coventry chairman Peter Rossborough admits that the club do not have the finances to afford promotion back up to the Championship this season.
Cov are now up to fourth in National One after Saturday's 29-13 victory over neighbours Birmingham Solihull.
But, having gone into administration two years ago, securing financial stability is still the priority.
"We couldn't afford to go up at the moment. We just haven't got the funds to do it yet," said Rossborough.
"What we're looking to do is survive this year and make sure we consolidate.
"We're going to have a look at what we can do next year," the former England full-back told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire.
Having seen his side win four of their last five matches, Rossborough praised the team and the coaching staff.
"We've had to cut back on our expenditure this year on our squad and we were a bit worried we wouldn't do as well as we might have done," he said.
"But the guys have really played well and our coaches Phil Maynard, Dave Addleton and Pete Glackin have done a fantastic job with them. It's really pleasing.
"You're never happy, but we're reasonably contented that we're doing OK."
A top five place in English rugby's third tier is now Rossborough's target this season for Cov, once one of the country's foremost club sides.
"We were in the top half last year," he added. "We want to be at least in the top third this year and, if we get there, it might just provide the springboard to have a go at something in the not too distant future."
