The 28-year-old, whose Edgbaston deal expired this winter, scored 912 runs and claimed 52 dismissals in all competitions this season.

"Tim is such an important part of our young and talented squad of players," director of cricket Ashley Giles told the club website.

Meanwhile, the Bears have released off-spinner Maurice Holmes, whose bowling action has been under scrutiny.

The 21-year-old, who made his County Championship debut in May, was twice reported to the England and Wales Cricket Board in the first half of the season.

It was believed that his delivery of the 'doosra', the off-spinner's googly, was the focus of the ECB's concern.

Former England wicketkeeper Ambrose joined Warwickshire from Sussex in 2006
