Covebntry's main fire station yesterday remembered the 343 US firefighters who died in the 9/11 attacks.
Members of orange and green watch at the Radford Road station held an impeccable silence as a Union Flag fluttered half-mast in the breeze.
Quiet descended on the station at 2.59pm – the time in Britain that the first of the twin towers fell.
The idea was to stay silent for a total of five minutes and 53 seconds – one second for every one of the FDNY heroes who died that day. Radford Road watch commander John Burns said: “All across the world, firefighters share a certain brotherhood, we are all of a certain breed.
“We share the same dangers and do the same job.
“As a firefighter you are always welcomed at any firehouse in the world; you don’t even have to speak the same language.
“Three hundred and forty-three firefighters passed away that day – that’s the same number working on any one shift across the West Midlands.”
