A Coventry man says he feels lucky to be alive after a brick was hurled at his car as he drove under a railway bridge.

Kaldip Singh, aged 57, was driving home from work when his windscreen was cracked in half by a missile thrown from the railway bridge over Hen Lane in Holbrooks.

He was one of six drivers targeted while driving along the same stretch of road within ten minutes of each other, during the early hours of yesterday.

Mr Singh said: “It was frightening. If it had been a bigger brick it could have come through the window and killed somebody. It’s very serious.”

The shaken driver immediately stopped his car and dialled 999. He said as he was making the call he could see missiles being thrown at other passing traffic.

He added: “I was coming from the Ricoh Arena end and must have only been travelling 10mph.

"All of a sudden a brick comes from the top of the bridge and cracks the windscreen in two.

"My window was open and I could hear shouting and then some smaller stones were thrown.

“I drove on and parked up and called the police.”

Police have arrested four teenagers – aged 15 and 16 – following the incident.

In total, officers received reports of five vehicles suffering damage, while one driver also dialled 999 to report a near miss.

Within minutes of the 999 calls, shortly after 1am, response officers, police dogs and the force helicopter were scrambled to the scene.

Police officers chased four youths who ran off along the railway line.

One teenager was arrested in an alleyway off Glaisdale Avenue, Holbrooks, while three others were arrested nearby.

A Coventry Police spokesman said: “Teenagers may view this as some kind of prank but throwing objects from bridges into the path of traffic can cause serious damage to a vehicle.”

Three 16-year-olds and a 15-year-old remain in police custody.

A vehicle recovery lorry which is normally parked near me also had its windshield smashed yesterday, possibly during the same incident?

Three teenagers accused of throwing bricks from a railway bridge at passing traffic have been charged with criminal damage.

A 15-year-old boy from Northampton and two 16-year-olds – one from Coventry and one from Daventry – each face five counts of criminal damage to vehicles.

They have been bailed to appear at Coventry Youth Court on July 20 where they will face allegations that they threw missiles at vehicles from a bridge over Hen Lane, Holbrooks, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

They are forbidden from associating with each other before their court appearance.

Another 16-year-old has been bailed without charge.

"Criminal damage", what a joke! They should have been charged with attempted murder. :fuming:
