More than half of all Jobseekers Allowance claimants have an illness of some kind. 27% have a temporary illness and 28% have a permanent illness. This includes patients with terminal illnesses such as cancer or heart failure or so-called progressive illnesses such as Multiple Sclerosis. Anyone who can propel themselves 50 yards in a wheelchair and sit at a workstation is now considered 'fit for work'. Ditto blind people who are able to use a guidedog to get around.
Forgot to add I actually know someone who threatened to commit suicide on a couple of occasions when his Jobseekers Allowance failed to be paid on time and this was long before the recent cutbacks.
Perverse as it sounds the more a person does to make themselves employable the more likely they are to have their benefits cut off
