About 350 well-wishers greeted the prince as he returned to royal duties by taking part in the RSC's 50th anniversary celebrations.

One man in the crowd asked the prince how his head was the day after the royal wedding.

Prince Charles laughed and said he had lost his voice.

A woman in the crowd said she hoped the prince had a wonderful day.

He said it was splendid and asked her if she had watched the wedding on television.

'Very grateful'

The show was performed at the the company's revamped theatre.

Greg Doran, the RSC's chief associate director, said he was very grateful Prince Charles had made the visit after the royal wedding.

Sir Patrick Stewart CBE, who has appeared in a number of the company's plays was also in attendance.

In February it was announced the Yorkshire-born international film star was to receive this year's Pragnell Shakespeare Birthday Prize.
