The mother of an autistic teenager who was rescued from his bedroom after fire engulfed their home has paid tribute to the hero neighbour who freed him.

Julia Soutter, 45, was downstairs in the family’s home, in Coombe Park Road, Binley, when she smelled smoke.

Thinking it was the washing machine she stayed put, but when she heard a crackling noise she left the room to discover her living room was ablaze.

She grabbed daughter Arndrea, 16, and alerted husband Ellery, 47, before trying to get in to son Logan’s bedroom.

The 14-year-old’s door was wedged shut, though, and with smoke billowing through the house she was forced to retreat.

Mrs Soutter raced outside and started screaming for help, alerting neighbour Jason Allen, 22.

He grabbed the first tool he could find from his family’s garage and raced to the home, using a car and a wheelie bin to gain access to a nearby roof.

Jason, an IT technician at ThyssenKrupp Services, in Coventry Business Park, then smashed through Logan’s bedroom window to let Ellery in.

Minutes later fire crews arrived and helped them all to safety.
