Plans to stop traffic going through Broadgate in Coventry will be discussed with bus companies today.

The proposals have come about after a massive consultation into £7 million plans to revamp Broadgate and places like the Bullyard in time for the city hosting Olympic football next summer.

One of the most popular responses about Broadgate was that it should be made a public square, blocked off to vehicles.

The council are now prepared to go with that idea and bosses say they are keen to work with bus companies to try to figure out new routes.

Council Leader John Mutton said: “Local people deserve a city centre they can be proud of and that’s what we want to deliver.”

“Best of all – this isn’t just talk, it will happen and happen fast – a fantastic new square designed by local residents – the people who know and love this city best.”

Reacting to the plans a National Express spokesperson said: “National Express Coventry is continuing to work closely with the City Council to help shape their proposals for the Broadgate and city centre road restrictions.”

“We are concerned these initial proposals would cause major disruption to city centre bus services, which in turn will significantly affect bus users, shoppers, traders and those with limited mobility.”

“We will consider putting forward a formal objection to the traffic regulation orders to protect the interests of people who use the bus in Coventry.”

“We are hopeful however that we can resolve many of these issues through our continued discussions with the City Council.”

A meeting between bus firms and the council will be held today in Birmingham.
