Emergency services were called to Oliver Street, Foleshill at 5.45pm on Sunday where they discovered a crop of 150 cannabis plants.

It is believed the fire at the terraced house began in the loft, which was being used to grow seedlings of the Class B drug.

Firefighters also found a further two rooms were being used to grow the drugs.

The fire is understood to have started after the mains electrical supply was tapped into to power the operation.

The fire service notified Coventry Police of the discovery and an investigation has now been launched. Police seized the plants.

A spokesman for Coventry Police said those inside the house are understood to have tried but failed to put the fire out themselves.

They had fled by the time the emergency services arrived.

Officers are in contact with the landlord to try and trace the tenants.
