The council in Coventry is set to back plans to spend another £6 million getting rid of pot holes on the city’s roads.

The amount being pledged is the same as last year and comes at a time when the council’s been ordered to find nearly £20 million of savings over the next year, with another £20 million lost in government grants.

As well as the pot of cash for resurfacing, £4 million will also be spent on improving safety at busy junctions and accident blackspots, and also on things like joining up cycle routes and reviewing road signs.

Councillor Lindsley Harvard, Cabinet Member for City Services said:

“Local people have been clear that the repair of our city’s roads is a real priority for them and that makes it a real priority for us.”

“That’s why we have also pledged to continue to invest year on year until we have a road network to be proud of rather than ashamed of. ”

“We inherited a massive problem with our roads – the scale of the task was enormous but I believe we are making progress and by the end of next March we will have treated over a quarter of the city’s road network.”

“We are using a range of different treatments on the roads – but all of them extend the life of the road and importantly provide protection against the worst of the weather and as a result our roads have stood up quite well to the winter months.”

“This means we are doing less emergency repairs and can now be more focused on long term repairs.”

“We are also working hard now to repair the city’s pavements and to address safety concerns where there are recorded accidents and where local people know that there have been lots of near misses.”

“This means we have got the right balance between rectifying damaged roads, taking preventative action before damage occurs and investing in schemes that will improve safety.”

The council’s cabinet is set to met to discuss the investment on March 15th.
