A woman called 999 to complain that her cat was annoying her, police have revealed.BBC News reports that Greater Manchester Police have released audio of the phone call to remind the public not to call unless there is a genuine emergency.
On the call, the woman says: "Hiya love, I've got a bit of an emergency. It's been going on for two hours now and it's doing my head in."
When the operator asks what the problem is, the caller replies: "My cat's been playing with string."
Meanwhile, in another call a man rang the emergency line to say that he was stuck on a patch of ice and was too scared to move.
"We are still expecting a high volume of calls on New Year's Eve," said Supt. Karan Lee, Greater Manchester Police's head of call handling. "Research tells us that a very high percentage of these will not be related to an actual emergency.
"Silly pranks can have a major impact on members of the public who need the police. I don't want a person to call 999 and be delayed because someone else is calling to report something that is not an emergency or, worse still, a deliberate joke."
