It’s being claimed 29,000 people in Coventry are missing out on free help to bring their fuel bills down.

New research by the Home Heat Helpline’s found only 538 people in the city have signed up for assistance, including receiving free cavity wall insultation.

It’s thought up to half a million people could be missing out across the West Midlands.

The Helpline are urging households here to prepare for next winter now, by seeing if they’re entitled to any help.

Spokesman Peter Jenkins said: “If you are struggling to pay your energy bills we may be able to help you. We can try to get you onto the energy company’s reduced tariffs, and can also help with grants for insulating your home, along with more flexible payment options.”

It comes as Coventry-based energy firm E.On say 1 in 5 homes in the West Midlands are being heated up to tropical temperatures of between 25 and 30 degrees during the winter months.

We’re being told to turn the thermostat down by 1 degree to save around 10% off our bills.

The Home Heat Helpline is a free, not-for-profit phone line set up by Britain’s energy companies to help customers who are struggling to pay their energy bills and keep warm.

They can be contacted on 0800 33 66 99 or via www.homeheathelpline.org.uk.
