The owner of a boutique in one of Coventry’s oldest streets wants to convert it to a takeaway specialising in Afro-Caribbean food.

Owner Henry Joseph said the recession has hit the rag trade hard and there is more demand for food than fashion.

If he wins planning approval, Cyrus Faze in Far Gosford Street would become a hot food takeaway and cafe.

Mr Joseph said: “Back in 2006 and 2007 there were a lot of people changing their clothes, now they are only trying to feed themselves.

“The other food stores in the area are doing fine as there are many students in the area.

“The demand of this street is different now.

“People are worrying about what they are putting into their bodies, my shop does not fit in with the street, it will only fit in if I do food.

“My takeaway will be different to the rest in the street because I will be doing Afro-Caribbean food. It is what students in the area are demanding.”

Mr Joseph will be applying for a 10pm licence for his new business, operating Monday to Saturday.
