Woman told to pay extra £210 for holiday after friend dies

A travel agent told a Coventry woman she would have to fork out an extra £210 for her summer holiday – because her best friend’s shock death meant their hotel room would not be full.



Every year Linda Fagan, 43, and Michelle McCamphill, 43, would holiday with family and friends and in 2011 they booked to spend a fortnight in the Turkish resort of Kusadasi.

But in November, Michelle died suddenly leaving Linda, of Thomas Sharp Road, Canley, in a state of shock.

Before Michelle’s funeral, Linda went to see staff at the Cannon Park branch of Thomas Cook.

They said that because Michelle would not be travelling with them their hotel room would not be full and Linda, as the lead member on the booking, would have to pay an extra £210 occupancy fee.

Linda wrote two letters to Thomas Cook, explaining the situation, but received only a phone call back from customer services stating that because neither Linda or Michelle had travel insurance she would have to pay.
