Campaigners have reacted angrily to news that hundreds of medical staff face the axe in Coventry and Warwickshire.
Last week the Telegraph revealed NHS bosses expect to cut 450 frontline jobs – including nurses.
Hundreds more support staff and office workers are also under threat.
These cuts could be just the tip of the iceberg as they only cover two of the region’s six NHS trusts.
Campaigners at Rugby Against the Cuts fear the plans could devastate the town’s health services.
Roy Sandison, the group’s trade union liaison officer, said: “The Con-Dem government said it would protect frontline services.”
“Sacking nurses and doctors will not do that and patients will clearly suffer.
“We do not know the exact details yet, but we are very concerned about the local impact in Rugby and Warwickshire. How, for example, will St Cross Hospital be affected?”
The figures were outlined in routine forward planning documents and were obtained by campaign group False Economy.
They show Nuneaton’s George Eliot Hospital expects to cut 127 nurses, 48 other clinical staff and 82 admin workers over the next three years.
